FAQs FOR STUDENTS
Q: WHO CAN TELL ME MORE ABOUT SKILLEDTRADESBC PROGRAMS LIKE YOUTH TRAIN AND YOUTH WORK?
A: SkilledTradesBC’s Youth Initiatives Administrator can help! Contact them at 778-328-8700, 1-866-660-6011 (toll-free in B.C.) or email@example.com
Q: WHO CAN CONNECT ME WITH AGENCIES AND RESOURCES TO HELP ME FIND AN EMPLOYER SPONSOR?
A: Connect with your local WorkBC office and go online at www.workbc.ca/trades and sign up as a job seeker.
Q: WHAT IS AN EMPLOYER SPONSOR?
A: An employer sponsor is someone who works in a trade and has agreed to take on the responsibility of training an apprentice. They are your onsite teacher and mentor as you learn the skills you need to do your trade. Search by trade to find employers who are looking for apprentices in your area using WorkBC’s Apprenticeship job match.
Q: WHAT IS A DESIGNATED TRAINING PROVIDER?
A: A designated training provider is a university, college or other educational institution that has been approved by SkilledTradesBC to provide technical training. So far there are 45 designated training providers across BC, so you have lots to choose from.
Q: WHAT IS MY ROLE AS AN APPRENTICE?
A: As an apprentice, it’s your job to register for classroom training every year at a designated training provider, find an employer sponsor and track your work-based training hours.
Q: WHAT IS SKILLEDTRADESBC’S ROLE IN MY TRADES TRAINING?
A: The Industry Training Authority oversees trades training in BC and works with government, industry, employers, unions and training providers to increase job opportunities in the trades. They oversee your exams, assessments and issue your Certificate of Qualification or Red Seal certification.
Q: WHY DID THE PROGRAM NAMES CHANGE?
A: The program names were changed to create more clarity for students, educators and parents. Acronyms such as ACE IT (Accelerated Credit Enrollment in Industry Training) were long and difficult to explain. The new names better reflect how students move through trades programs, plus they are easier to remember!
Q: I AM ALREADY ENROLLED IN AN ACE IT PROGRAM. AM I NOW IN A YOUTH TRAIN PROGRAM? WHAT WILL APPEAR ON MY TRANSCRIPT?
A: If you are already enrolled in an ACE IT program, you will continue to be an ACE IT student and this will be reflected on your high school transcript. Only students who register for a Youth Train in Trades Program (starting January 2017) will have the new course shown on their transcript.
Q: WHO CAN EXPLAIN THE ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR MY TRADE AND TELL ME IF THERE IS A YOUTH TRAIN PROGRAM OR A YOUTH WORK PROGRAM AT MY SCHOOL?
A: Your High School Counsellor can help with this. They can also help find the closest designated training provider for your trade.
Q: HOW ARE THE NEW PROGRAMS DIFFERENT FROM THE OLD PROGRAMS?
A: The new programs are not different from old programs, they just have new names!
